Call to reduce PDF use in course readers

Call to reduce PDF use in course readers

by | 29 Jan 2018

One component of the new Reader Agreement 2017–2020, regarding the reuse of teaching material subject to copyright protection, is that all Dutch universities will strive to reduce the total number of extracts by 5% each year. In order to achieve this, the VSNU recommends linking to a text you wish to cite rather than saving and offering it as PDF.

Help your faculty to save on copyright costs

As a lecturer / course coordinator, you will naturally decide for yourself which material to include in the course readers. However, you can help by greatly reducing the number of PDFs in EleUM, which will prevent your faculty from being billed for steep additional costs. We depend on your cooperation in this matter. Therefore, we ask that you explore the possibility of providing this teaching material via a link.

E-books and e-journals are available to Maastricht University (UM) staff and students in the Online Library to an increasing extent. To create this kind of link, go to the search results in LibSearch. The UM Library will be happy to help you with this. Contact us via Ask your librarian.

If no link is available at this time, the Online Library might have an equally viable alternative on offer.
