Access, library card and membership

As a member of the University library you need a UMcard  for:

  • Borrowing books
  • Requesting journals/books from the closed stacks
  • Printing and copying
  • Inter library loan services
  • Paying (UM cafeteria)
  • Accessing lockers (in the Inner City Library)

How to get a UMcard

Students UM and AVMU

UM students

Students UM  automatically receive a UMcard at the start of their study. You can immediately use your card in the library.

AVMU Students

Students of the University of Midwifery Education & Studies Maastricht (AVMU) automatically receive a UMcard at the start of their study. Activate your card for library use at the information desk.

The information desk is located on the ground floor of the Inner City Library  and at level 1 in the Randwyck Library 
The opening hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8.30 – 17.00, Tuesday 10.30 – 17.00,
Saturday (only Inner City Library): 11.00 – 14.00.

Employees UM

Employees automatically receive a UM card at the start of their employment.

You need to activate and update your UM card for library use.

Employees MUMC and AVMU

Employees automatically receive a MUMC/AVMU card at the start of their employment.

Activate your UM card for library use at the information desk  of the library.

The opening hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8.30 – 17.00, Tuesday 10.30 – 17.00,
Saturday (only Inner City Library): 11.00 – 14.00.

Employees OU

Researchers and supporting staff of the OU can use this webform  to apply for a UMcard.

Within two weeks the UMcard will be sent to your work address.

UM Alumni

Apply for a UMcard at the information desk .

Costs €36.50 a year. With your first registration, you will receive a voucher, worth €5,-,  for printing and copying purposes.

What do you need to do?

  • Show a valid identity card.
  • Sign a statement that says that you agree to the conditions of private use (this statement is not applicable for owners of a ‘business’ pass; see below for information on the business pass).

How long is your library card valid?

  • 1 year from the date of registration.
  • Your membership stops automatically.
  • Each year you can apply for a new membership at the information desk.

Types of membership:

  • 1-year membership:
  • ‘Private’
    Use the library for private purposes.
    Costs €36.50 a year
  • Business’
    For business users (individuals from institutions or companies).
    Costs €112.50 per year.
  • Free membership:
  • Dutch universities and universities in the Euregion
    For students and staff of most regular Dutch universities and the universities of Aachen, Liège and Hasselt. Show a valid student ID or a written confirmation of your employment from one of these universities.
  • Libraries in Limburg
    For students and staff of institutes of professional education in Limburg. Show a valid student ID or a written confirmation of your employment.
    Members of the Municipal Library (Centre Ceramique Library) receive a UM card if they can show a recent proof of enrolment.
  • Library 4-weeks reference card:
    This card can be used to peruse books and journals in the library. It provides no borrowing facilities.
    Costs €12,50.
