In recent years online collaboration has increased tremendously in the academic world. Nature, the international weekly journal of science, maps out the ways in which this is all happening. The mainstream channels like Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Scholar are much in use, but also a platform specifically targeted at researchers, ResearchGate, is used intensively.
