Open Education at Maastricht University

At Maastricht University (UM), our approach to open education is unique. Most of our researchers also teach and produce high-quality research outputs. Our teachers create excellent learning materials, and many students also contribute to peer learning. While teachers often share materials through platforms like Canvas, Google Drive, or email, there is an opportunity to amplify their impact. By licensing materials with Creative Commons and following Open Science principles, teachers gain recognition and maintain control over their work. We aim to foster a culture where educators engage with openly available materials more frequently. We aim to unburden them with the right support to improve accessibility for students.

Open Science in Education at Maastricht University

Within the University Library, we are spearheading efforts to integrate open science principles into education through a dedicated initiative called Open Science in Education. Our goal is to seamlessly integrate high-quality research findings and knowledge outputs into educational content, thereby encouraging educators and learners to actively share and co-create resources. Ultimately, we aim to establish open science as a fundamental norm within the learning process. To support this endeavour, we offer a range of services, including:

  1. Workshops and training sessions (general, advanced, and customised)
  2. Open Educational Resources (OER) Guidance (finding, reusing, creating, publishing, redesigning courses, and metadata)
  3. Information on Creative Commons licenses
  4. Publishing Open Textbook with/via Maastricht University Press
