Maastricht University encourages scholars to publish Open Access. The University Library has arranged with academic publishers to enable UM and MUMC+ researchers to publish articles OA free of charge (100% APC discount) or with an APC discount (e.g. 15% APC discount) in high-quality journals.

Please note that only UM and MUMC+ corresponding authors can claim the APC discount offered by a publisher deal. For some deals, It is essential to use your UM or MUMC+ email address in your correspondence with the publisher for identification. In addition, authors must mention UM or MUMC+ as their affiliate in the article to qualify for a discount.
This guide gives you an overview of the available publisher arrangements and how you can use them. Before finding out about the requirements and workflows of publishers, look up selected titles in the OA Journal Browser to find out the APC discounts available to you.

How does it work?

- The university will be alerted of the APC funding request. If approved, the work will be published at no additional cost as ACS OA with a CC-BY license and made freely available on the ACS Publications website.

UM and MUMC+ corresponding authors receive a 15% discount on the APC when publishing in selected BMC journals.
BMC has an evolving portfolio of 300 peer-reviewed journals, sharing discoveries from science, technology, engineering and medicine research communities. In 1999 we made high-quality research open to everyone who needed to access it – and in making the Open Access model sustainable, we changed the world of academic publishing.
How does it work?
- Maastricht University has a supporter membership at BioMed Central. This membership entitles researchers and students to a 15% discount on the author’s fee (APC) for a selection of BMC journals.

Hybrid, as well as gold open access journals, are included in this deal.
Cambridge University Press is the publishing house of the University of Cambridge. The publishing house was founded in 1534 and is the oldest still existing publishing house in the world. Cambridge University Press has 50 branches worldwide and about 2000 employees. It publishes 45,000 different books and 300 scientific journals. Part of the publisher’s profit is returned to the university.
How does it work?
- You (the submitting corresponding author) must use your institutional email address during submission.
- After an article has been accepted, you can indicate under which affiliation you submitted the article; CUP will know that you are entitled to remission.
- Click the ‘Apply Discount’ button to confirm open access publication.
- There is a maximum of 1500 free open access publications in total for this agreement. When the maximum is about to be reached, a notification will be placed here.

There are no publishing costs for Dutch authors in more than 2200 hybrid and gold open access journals.
How does it work?
- Indicate in your article’s publication stage (author journey) that your research has been conducted at Maastricht University or MUMC+.
- Indicate that you opt for a CC-BY license.
- Then choose the Gold Open Access option.

How does it work?
- Use your UM or MUMC email address and select the correct institutional affiliation during submission.
- Upon submission, corresponding authors are required to indicate that they want to make their article open access via a mandatory yes/no question.

Corresponding authors of participating universities can publish open access without any costs in the 58 hybrid journals of this publisher.
IOP Publishing is the publishing company of the Institute of Physics (IOP), a not-for-profit society. It provides publications through which scientific research is distributed worldwide, including 70 journals and community websites, magazines, conference proceedings and books.
How does it work?
- Use your UM or MUMC+ email address and correct affiliation during submission.
- IOP Publishing will identify articles from eligible corresponding authors during the peer review process.
- Accepted articles will be published OA automatically with a CC-BY license.
- Articles published with a subscription license and subsequently identified as eligible for free open access can be published open access retrospectively by request of the author.

Publish without costs in 50 hybrid open access journals from LWW.
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), established in 1998, is an imprint of the publishing conglomerate Wolters Kluwer. Under the LWW brand, Wolters Kluwer publishes scientific, technical, and medical content such as textbooks, reference works, and over 275 scientific journals (medical or other public health journals).
How does it work?
- Use your UM or MUMC+ email address on submission, and select the correct institutional affiliation; LWW will use this information to accept the publication to check eligibility for open access without any costs.
- Your publication will be published Open Access with a CC-BY license by LWW.
- Please note that this agreement has 300 open access publications per year. We will place a notification when we almost reach the maximum.

Publish without costs in almost 350 hybrid open access journals by OUP.
Oxford University Press (OUP) is a major publisher of academic journals in the sciences and the humanities.
How does it work?
- You (the submitting corresponding author) log in to Author Services of OUP with your account. Use your UM or MUMC+ email address.
- After accepting your article, you choose via OUP’s online licensing and payment system: Author Services for an Open Access license.
- Next, by choosing the refer charges option, you make sure that the library will settle the APC costs with the pre-payment account of the Dutch universities.
- The university affiliated with the corresponding author has to approve this request. Make sure we can identify you as a staff member.
- Yearly all participants together are allowed to publish a maximum of 760 articles. We will notify you when the maximum is about to be reached.

Articles published as part of commercially sponsored supplements are excluded from this agreement. Articles published in society-owned titles, where the owner society does not grant permission, are also excluded.
- Valid for publications entered into SAGE’s production system during the term of this agreement. Authors can not claim an APC discount after publication.
- 100% discount on the APC for 918 SAGE Choice journals.
- 20% discount on the APC for the 186 SAGE Pure Gold open access journals (automatically applied).

How does it work?
- Authors should use their institutional email addresses. Sage will recognise the corresponding author as a researcher of a Dutch university based on email affiliation and selected institution.
- Upon acceptance of the article for publication in a SAGE Choice journal, the corresponding author receives an email from SAGE with the request to complete a form and return it immediately. SAGE will publish the article open access without cost if they receive the document on time. The form asks for a code, but you do not have to fill it out. Authors can not make articles open access after publication.
- SAGE will automatically apply the 20% discount for publication in SAGE’s Pure Gold Access Journals when the corresponding author is recognised as affiliated with a Dutch university.

Springer uses the acceptance date of an article to determine eligibility for the current year.
How does it work?
- At article acceptance, Springer will ask you to confirm your affiliation by selecting your affiliation in the “Special Affiliation” drop-down menu and agreeing to the OA copyright and license terms.
- The selected institute will verify your affiliation and approve your request.

John Wiley & Sons, Inc., also known as Wiley, is a global academic publisher of books, journals and encyclopaedias.
How does it work?
- Always use your UM or MUMC+ email address to publish and communicate with the publisher. Wiley uses this address to detect if you are eligible for this deal. During the submitting process, you will get the information you need to make the publication available in open access without additional costs.
- Once your article is accepted, register or log in to Wiley Author Services. On your Author Dashboard in Author Services, click ‘Order OnlineOpen’. If your request is approved, you will receive a confirmation mail.
