What are AI prompts?
A prompt is simply an instruction you give to a Generative AI tool to receive a customised output you are looking for.
In the AI Prompt Library, you will find prompts from different categories, such as learning, exams, writing or feedback. The description of each prompt includes tips and disclaimers, which offer additional information about the prompt. The AI Prompt Library indicates which prompting methods were used and why they are important.

How to use the Prompting Library?
- Choose a prompt that matches your needs. Each prompt has a short description on the main page and a longer description on the prompt’s page
The prompts below are organised into four categories:

- Exams – Prompts to help students and educators create and review exam-like questions.
- Writing – Prompts to support UM staff and students in improving their written work.
- Feedback – Prompts designed to give feedback on various tasks.
- Learning – Prompts aimed at helping students study more effectively.
- Read the prompt It is important that you understand what the prompt does before using it.
- Replace each placeholder (such as add context) with your specific text to complete the prompt template.
- The placeholders are in italics, and their labels (such as add context) clearly indicate what type of text to add.
- Any delimiters used in the template, such as <> or %%, should not be removed. If a placeholder is between delimiters, the text should be added between the delimiters.
- Context is an important element that must be added to many prompts. Context is the description of relevant background information that helps the model understand the specific details and purpose of the task.
- Study an example to better understand how to fill out the template correctly and what kind of response you can expect from the prompt.
- Review the tips to find any additional information that can help you use the prompt more effectively.
- Run the prompt in an AI tool of your choice, and adjust it as needed to achieve more tailored results. AI chatbots are interactive; don’t hesitate to engage in a conversation. If the first response isn’t what you expected or if you need further clarification, continue the dialogue. Remember, the clearer and more specific you are with your questions and requests, the better the response will be.

The Prompt Library presents examples to make better use of Generative AI (GenAI) educational design, delivery, study and assessment practices. Certain GenAI practices in education may not be encouraged or allowed within your faculty’s policy framework and/or rules and regulations. When in doubt, please check the recent faculty rules on the use of GenAI in education.
UM does not recommend to use GenAI for the assessment of students since the EU AI Act flags such practices as high risk. More specifically the following assessment practices with the help of GenAI should be avoided:
- Determining access or admission of students to educational institutions or programmes
- Evaluating students’ learning outcomes
- Assessing the appropriate educational level for a student
- Monitoring and detecting unauthorised behaviour by students during exams
