Add a new dataset to DataverseNL
If you are registering and publishing data in DataverseNL for the first time, check out the user guide on creating a new dataset or contact your faculty’s dataverse curator for guidance.
Before finalizing the publication of your dataset, an expert curator will perform a quality check on the metadata and supporting documents, ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Note that DataverseNL is not suitable for highly sensitive data.
ORCID
You can set up your Dataverse installation account to allow you to log in using your Open Researcher and Contributor iD (ORCID) credentials. The ORCID credential will also be used as Identifier when creating your dataset.
ORCID® is an independent non-profit effort to provide an open registry of unique researcher identifiers and open services to link research activities and organizations to these identifiers. Learn more at orcid.org.
Controlled vocabularies
A controlled vocabulary is a predefined and standardized set of terms used to ensure consistency in the description of data. In the context of DataverseNL, a controlled vocabulary helps researchers categorize and describe their datasets using consistent terminology, making it easier for others to find, understand, and reuse the data.
Why use a controlled vocabulary?
- Consistency: Ensures that all researchers use the same terms to describe similar data elements, reducing ambiguity.
- Improved searchability: Standardized terms make it easier for users to discover datasets through search and filtering.
- Interoperability: Facilitates data sharing and integration across different systems by using universally recognized terms.
- Metadata quality: Enhances the quality and reliability of dataset descriptions, making them more useful for future research.
Example in DataverseNL
If a dataset includes information about a research subject’s profession, using a controlled vocabulary, it ensures that everyone refers to the same term and topic in the same way, rather than using varied or vague descriptions.
In DataverseNL, controlled vocabularies can be applied to metadata fields, such as Subject Category, Data Type, or Geospatial Coverage, ensuring that datasets are described in a standardized way.
When describing a term, remember to add a URL to the definition. You can search for the definition in the EU Vocabularies, published by the Publications Office of the EU.
