Maastricht University adopts Canvas from August 2020

10 Oct 2019

You might already have heard something about it: as off 1 August 2020: Maastricht University (UM) transitions to a new learning management system called Canvas. Don’t worry, at this moment there is nothing for you to do. So just sit back, relax and read on! But let us inform you about the reasons for this change, the project team that will support this transition and their plans for the upcoming year.

Best contestant

The learning management system (LMS) Canvas will replace Blackboard as from the next academic year. After a thorough process of testing and mapping the systems to our educational context, Canvas proved the best contestant in the tender process, meeting UM requirements and fitting our PBL structure. From August 2020, all courses will be offered in Canvas. A project team will take care of the transition process in which all students and staff will be informed and prepared for this journey in the upcoming year.

Why Canvas?

Both teaching staff and students involved in the testing phase found Canvas was the most intuitive LMS, but there are more reasons to choose Canvas:

  • Canvas meets basic needs of faculties (i.e. attendance tracking, grading workflows, portfolio management, blended learning, collaboration, and peer feedback scenarios)
  • Canvas offers integration in the UM infrastructure (i.e. connection to Student Information System, Student Portal, Syllabus+)
  • Canvas links seamlessly with third party systems, such as plagiarism detection tool and (peer) feedback tooling, as well as the Mediasite video platform

The transition project

This September, the transition project has been launched. A team with teaching staff, students, educationalists, and support staff from all faculties as well as representatives from EDLAB and the EDview team kicked off. They will take care of the transition during the upcoming year and will make sure that Canvas is set up in a way that it fits the educational practice of UM and its faculties. The project team, together with the faculty EleUM coordinators, will also offer a training programme for teaching staff in each faculty to take place as from next spring.
