Are your students unable to attend your classes or other sessions in Maastricht? Then Collaborate might be a useful tool. Blackboard Collaborate is a virtual classroom application that is easy to use and integrated in EleUM in such a way that you can organise a virtual session with you students from within your course environment.
Collaborate is already being used by a number of your UM colleagues (e.g. from FHML and MGSoG) for online lectures, meetings and presentations, and office hours.
Collaborate enables the delivery of online learning, training, coaching, and collaborating by offering:
- Live audio and video presentation
- Exchange of text messages
- Shared whiteboards
- Application and file sharing
not only between your own students, you may even want to invite participants from outside the university to join in.
How does Collaborate work?
The audio and video connections enable synchronous communication with participants everywhere. Participants can use the whiteboard to share texts, pictures and drawings. Text messages can be exchanged via the chat option. You can present PowerPoint slides and websites and share any other application on your screen with you students. Using the poll option you can gather your students’ opinion or understanding of a certain topic.
During the session students can indicate with various symbols whether they are able to follow your presentation, agree with your proposition or – if they have any – ask questions. As the instructor you decide which options are available to your students and whether to allow them to contribute to the discussion, or present their own material.
If you like your students to work together in subgroups that can be accommodated with the option breakout rooms, providing a separate chat and whiteboard for each group. Sessions can be recorded to review them at a later time.
