Building a Maastricht University and MUMC+ Research Data Management (RDM) Experts Community

The Research Data Management (RDM) Experts Community meetings have been a success. We can proudly announce that an RDM community has been up and running for the last 7 months. Do you want to know more about the RDM Experts community, when our community meets, what topics we discussed during past meetings and how to become a member? Then please read on.

At the end of last year, the University Library began hosting monthly RDM Experts Community meetings. This past December 2020, the community held its first kick-off with a meet and greet session to get to know colleagues in the RDM field. During this first meeting, the participants discussed challenges and opportunities for RDM support. Six interactive meetings then followed this kick-off session. During the meetings, participants gave presentations, case studies, and led plenary discussions. The goal of the RDM Expert Community meetings is to build a community with RDM support professionals from Maastricht University and MUMC+ and to exchange knowledge and experiences. People interested in RDM are also welcome to join the community, attend the meetings and create content for the sessions.

We are pleased that after hosting seven meetings, we have now built a community of about 40 RDM experts and people interested in RDM. Every second Tuesday of the month from 15:30 to 17:00, the community meets and discusses a variety of topics. In the past meetings, MEMIC and DataHub presented their RDM-related services, researchers from the Institute of Data Science (IDS) gave a demo of the Data Science Research Infrastructure (DSRI), case studies were presented by data stewards, RDM supporters talked about their daily life as RDM supporters and more.

On June 8th, we hosted our last meeting before a short summer break. We took the opportunity to evaluate past meetings and gather input for upcoming meetings. The feedback from the participants showed that most of them found the RDM Experts Community meetings very useful and thought it was a good initiative to bring together RDM islands within UM and MUMC+. To improve the meetings, we will focus on increasing interaction and promoting networking. We expect to meet again in a face-2-face setting after the summer. We hope that in the future the meetings will result in collaborations between different RDM supporters, more uniform approaches, and UM-wide initiatives to improve RDM support.

If you would like to join the RDM Experts Community or learn more about the community, please do not hesitate to contact us via or subscribe to the RDM newsletter to be informed about the dates and program of upcoming meetings.
