Database info

The European Registry of Exonerations (EUREX) provides extensive information regarding documented cases of exoneration in Europe dating back to 1970.

This database includes cases where individuals were wrongfully convicted of a crime and subsequently exonerated.
The cases documented in EUREX are exoneration cases. An exoneration occurs when someone has been convicted of a crime by final judgment and is officially cleared in a post-conviction re-examination after, for example, new evidence of innocence becomes available.

These cases include situations where the convicted party
(a) has been declared factually innocent by an authorized government entity,
(b) has been acquitted of all charges by an authorized government entity,
(c) has had all charges dismissed by a court or prosecutor, or
(d) has received a full pardon from a governor or other competent authority.

However, it’s important to note that the cases cataloged in EUREX do not represent all instances of wrongful convictions in Europe.
