WorldCat is a huge master catalogue containing citations for library materials held by more than 10,000 libraries, including the UM Collection. In WorldCat you can find both references for physical collections (like books, DVD’s, CD’s) and electronic documents and media. Search results owned by libraries nearby are presented first in line if you have entered your actual location. If you access WorldCat within the Online Library the UM linking service will be available: this service provides access to the full text of licensed articles and e-Books.
The OAIster database of over 23 million records originating form harvesting ‘open archives’ all over the world has been included: these electronic documents are freely accessible. Article citations from Jstor and Elsevier are integrated as well.
You can contribute to WorldCat: on the WorldCat pages for particular items, you can add tags, enter a rating and a review, or a book’s table of contents under the ‘Details’ tab.

A language switch is available on the bottom of the screen.
The search box on the homepage enables you to make selections on type of publication by selecting one of the tabs. With your search terms searches will be done on titles, author names and keywords.
Advanced Search enables you to use limiters for your search like search filters on year of publication, language or ‘format’.
Boolean searching is NOT supported.

The WorldCat homepage presents lots of additional services. When you create a free user account you will be enabled to build lists of library items, bibliographies and reviews and keep them private or share them with friends.
You may retrieve citations of library materials in five common citation styles, and export them to EndNote or other formats.
WorldCat offers tools like widgets, plug-ins, apps, and downloads. You can even put WorldCat on your mobile phone.

The ‘identies network’ is a new feature: interactive maps display the interconnectivity between identities. An identity can be a person, a thing (e.g., the Titanic), a fictitious character (e.g., Harry Potter), or a corporation (e.g., IBM).”

WorldCat is een wereldwijd netwerk van bibliotheekcatalogi dat de catalogusgegevens bevat van meer dan 10.000 bibliotheken. WorldCat bevat zowel referenties naar de fysieke collecties (zoals boeken, audioboeken, video’s) als naar de elektronische media van de betrokken bibliotheken. Indien je jouw locatie invoert, worden zoekresultaten bij bibliotheken bij jou in de buurt bovenaan in de lijst getoond.
OAIster, de gemeenschappelijk database van meer dan 23 miljoen publiek toegankelijke elektronische documenten maakt deel uit van Worldcat evenals de artikelcitaties van Jstor en Elsevier.

Een taalwitch is beschikbaar onderaan het scherm. Op de homepage kun je een keuze maken op materiaalsoort door een van de tabjes boven de zoekbox te selecteren. Met de door jou ingegeven zoektermen wordt zowel op titels, auteursnamen als trefwoorden (keywords) gezocht. ‘Advanced Search’ biedt de mogelijkheid om hierin vooraf een keuze te maken. Ook biedt dit zoekscherm opties om zoekresultaten vooraf in te perken op bijvoorbeeld: jaar van uitgave, taal of ‘format’ (materiaalsoort). Booleaans zoeken is NIET mogelijk.

De WorldCat homepage biedt tal van additionele services. Indien je een ‘free user account’ aanmaakt kun je lijsten met bibliotheekreferenties, bibliografieën en reviews maken en persoonlijk bewaren of delen met vrienden.
Je vindt citaties van bibliotheekmateriaal in 5 gangbare stijlen en kunt deze bijvoorbeeld naar Endnote downloaden.
WordlCat biedt tools zoals widgets, plug-ins, apps, and downloads. Je kunt WordCat zelfs ook jouw mobiele telefoon raadplegen.
