New database: Investor-State LawGuide

25 Jun 2019

Interested in investment treaty arbitration? Looking for NAFTA and ICSID Convention decisions? As of this month, the UM Library is subscribed to the Investor-State LawGuide Database (ISLG).

The ISLG is a collection of tools for researching international investment treaty law. It facilitates access to individual treaties, arbitral rules, cases and other key materials by linking specific passages in arbitral awards to other documents discussing a similar issue.
The scope of ISLG’s document collection includes all publicly available decisions and awards where the subject of the claim is an investment treaty. Currently, NAFTA and ICSID awards and decisions are the most complete. The collection also includes investment treaties, bilateral investment treaties, and rules. These materials can be filtered in a variety of ways to enable you to obtain the research results you need.

Research components

The Investor-State LawGuide has the following useful research components:

  • Subject Navigator
Navigate through an electronic directory of investment treaty law that lays out subjects in branches and sub-branches of ever-increasing detail.
  • Article Citator
Instantly see how specific legal instruments relevant to investment treaty law have been interpreted by investment treaty arbitral tribunals.
  • Jurisprudence Citator
Instantly see how decisions and awards have been treated by subsequent investment treaty arbitral tribunals.
  • Treaties & Rules
Browse the text of all legal instruments relevant to investment treaty law in both XML and PDF formats.
  • Dispute Documents
View and filter all publicly available investment treaty decisions and awards.
  • Full-text search
Search the entire document collection (i.e., all documents listed under the Treaties & Rules and Dispute Documents tabs) by a term or phrase.

The basic interface of ISLG is user friendly. For an overview of the database and its functionality please refer to the tutorial videos on Screencast and YouTube.
