Special Collections and the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
On Expedition is back
In 2013 the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the University Library organised On Expedition, a MaRBLe-project aimed to stimulate excellence by engaging students in the study of early travel books. This year On Expedition is back, with a Wikipedian in Residence and an edit-a-thon.
Wikipedian in residence
From February to June 2014 students are once more engaged in the study of early travel books. This time Wikipedian in Residence Sandra Fauconnier assists participating students in contributing some of their acquired knowledge to Wikipedia and facilitates the donation of digitised illustrations from the books to Wikimedia Commons. Within the nationwide initiative Expedition Wikipedia (under guidance of the Dutch Foundation for Academic Heritage), she initiates events and serves as a linking pin between Wikipedia and the universities.
Wednesday 7 May Sandra Fauconnier organised an edit-a-thon for this year’s students at the library. For four hours students edited and created Wikipedia articles, further supported by Prof. Dr Ernst Homburg, Ass. Prof. Dr Annemieke Klijn and Romaine, a frequent wikipedian from the Dutch Wikipedia and publisher of the newsletter This Month in GLAM. The GLAM-Wiki initiative (galleries, libraries, archives, museums with Wikipedia) helps cultural institutions share their resources with the world through high-impact collaboration alongside experienced Wikipedia editors.
