Introducing the Digital Skills Corner

This prompted ICTS and the library to launch a new pilot: the Digital Skills Corner. During this monthly walk-in session, students have the opportunity to improve their basic digital skills. In an accessible and personal setting, students can ask IT-related questions, and each session will also cover a specific theme.

The first session in September focused on the topic “Staying safe online.” Tips & tricks were shared on how to stay safe online, and the presenters gave information on what the UM offers to ensure online safety. Besides the UM license for Microsoft Office/365, there are other secure options. For example, Surfdrive (instead of Dropbox), Surffilesender (instead of WeTransfer), and other software downloads are made available via ICTS.

The first session was visited on a small scale, possibly because the new pilot was not yet known amongst all students or because they were too busy with the start of the new academic year. Therefore, the next session on 31 October will again focus on “Staying safe online,” this time organised in the Makerspace of the Inner City Library.

Digital Literacy

Digital Skills Corner is part of the UM Library Digital Literacy programme. The Digital Literacy programme is for all UM students and fosters them to become knowledgeable, competent, and critical academic digital citizens. Students following (parts of) the programme acquire relevant and necessary 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and dealing responsibly with and creating academic digital information. The library therewith contributes to equitable access to digital literacy skills development and state-of-the-art technological resources, such as our digital labs.
