The session introduced participants to SURF Research Cloud, which provides access to cloud computing across a variety of platforms.

During this hands-on training, participants were introduced to cloud computing fundamentals and guided through the key features of SURF Research Cloud, including:

  • How to create and manage your own virtual computing environment(s)
  • How to install and run your own applications
  • How to leverage the power of cloud computing for your research

As this was the first SURF Research Cloud training session at Maastricht University in quite some time, there was considerable interest among researchers. Registration filled up quickly, with all 30 places booked shortly after registration opened. The participants showed great interest throughout the session, asking questions and engaging in discussions during the coffee break. The SURF team particularly appreciated the thoughtful questions raised during the training. After the event, we sent a feedback questionnaire to all participants. Participant feedback highlighted the value of introducing researchers to the possibilities of SURF Research Cloud, including those who were previously unaware of the service.

Further training planned for 2027

Building on the positive feedback and strong interest from participants, we plan to organise further SURF Research Cloud sessions in 2027. These sessions will go beyond introductory topics and are expected to cover more advanced areas, such as:

Further details about the planned training sessions will be shared in due course. For questions about Research Computing or the support available to UM researchers, please contact the Research Computing Support team via Ask Your Librarian.
