The Get Connected scheme offers financial and technical support across three key pillars: improving access to educational offerings, promoting the sharing and (re)use of digital and Open Educational Resources (OER), and strengthening personalised learning pathways. Maastricht University’s (UM) successful proposal focuses on the second pillar: enhancing the discoverability and reuse of open learning materials.
With this project, Maastricht University Library aims to lay a solid foundation for an open, flexible, and accessible educational ecosystem. Central to the initiative is the integration of open learning materials into both institutional and national platforms, ensuring wider access for students and educators while reinforcing UM’s commitment to sustainability and academic autonomy.
Two innovative components form the core of the proposal:
- SmartOER Tool
An AI-powered discovery tool that assists UM educators in finding relevant Open Educational Resources. By analysing course descriptions and intended learning outcomes, the tool suggests suitable OER. It will be embedded in the UM Library website and developed in alignment with national interoperability standards, allowing for future integration with platforms like edusources. - ShareControl Pilot – Digital Literacy Programme
In collaboration with UM library’s Digital Literacy Team, this pilot explores how existing learning materials in Canvas can be shared via ShareControl and published to edusources. It will test metadata harvesting, including enrichment, licensing, and DOI assignment, with the university’s Digital Literacy programme as a concrete use case. The outcomes will serve as a blueprint for potential scaling across other programmes and faculties.
This project reflects UM’s strategic commitment to Open Science and digital innovation in education. With support from Npuls, UM will further empower its educators, reduce financial barriers for students, and contribute to a more collaborative and sustainable academic landscape.
