Teacher’s perspective: Bjorn Winkens’ battles and victories with online exams for FHML Statistics.

​Last year we had to switch to online testing due to COVID-19 measures. I had my reservations with respect to online testing, especially if the students were not on site. But digital also proved to have its’ benefits.

 

How would I prevent students cheating on their exams? All kinds of scenarios passed my mind where students got help from other students, family members, or even “hired help”. Although there were some safeguards in place, such as proctoring and randomising the (order of) questions and/or answer categories, I was glad to hear that MECC Maastricht was available for the exams this year.

 

TestVision, the programme used for online testing, appeared a nice tool for (online) exams which has some nice features such as randomising questions to create different versions of the exam. After a short introduction, I found it easy to use and see the benefits of such a programme (in addition to students being on site).

 

What helped a lot is that if I had any doubt or question, I could always ‘cry’ for help, which was offered very quickly and in a way even a layman such as I could understand (thank you Marjolijn Tinnemans*)!
