What is preregistration?

Preregistration involves documenting your research plan, including hypotheses, methods, and intended analyses, before collecting data. This approach supports transparency, reduces research bias, and helps prevent questionable practices.

Voices from the field

Recorded at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics (SBE), the video features Dr Roman Briker (Assistant Professor in Organisational Behaviour & HRM) and Dr Monika Barget (Assistant Professor in History). Roman and Monika are also the OSCM Open Science ambassadors for their respective faculties. Together, they discuss how preregistration can:

  • Increase transparency, reliability, and trust in your findings
  • Prevent research fraud
  • Protect researchers’ intellectual property

Watch the video Preregistration in academia – How it can make your research more findable and reliable, produced by the Open Science Community Maastricht.

The library’s role in preregistration

The University Library, in collaboration with OSCM, is exploring how best to support researchers interested in preregistering their projects. While structural services are still under development, OSCM currently offers a yearly workshop on preregistration and actively promotes Open Science principles across the university.

A dedicated webpage with further information and guidance on preregistration is in development and expected by the end of the year. In the meantime, you can learn more via the Maastricht University (UM) Open Science page.
