Writing a script helps you and others involved in the production: camera crew and editor. It helps you rethink and structure your content before starting filming.

When filming, a script helps tell the story in a structured way. This avoids many retakes and reduces post-editing time significantly.  On VideUM we offer a four-column script that is easy to use and share (Step 5 in Creating a video step by step). With a script, you can also check the length of the film. Short to 2 to 5 minute clips are most effective.

Collect visual resources

Find and collect images or footage you would like to include in your video: images, existing video, models, PowerPoints, et cetera. Tips:

• Use royalty free music
• Search for music, video, text and images published under a creative commons license. Vimeo, YouTube, Archive.org, SpinXpress, UnSplash.com and Flickr all provide information on the copyright license.
• Search video in academia.nl for material from the Dutch Institute of Sound and Vision. The UM library acquired a free license for all UM staff.
