Why do you need a library card?

As a member of the University library, you need a library card to:

  • Access the library
  • Borrow books
  • Request journals/books from the closed stacks
  • Print and copy
  • Use the Inter Library Loan service
  • Pay (UM cafeteria)

Access to the library

To create a safe and pleasant study environment, the library has access gates. To open the gates you need a valid library card.

During examination weeks, the Inner City Library and the Randwyck Library are only accessible to UM students, UM employees and our contract partners (MUMC+ and OU). Apart from these examination periods, the UB welcomes all visitors.

How do you get a library card?

UM students

UM students automatically receive a UMcard at the start of their study. You can immediately use your card to enter the library and make use of the facilities.

UM employees

Employees automatically receive a UMcard at the start of their employment.
You need your UMcard to enter the library. You need to activate and update your UMcard for library use.

AVMU students and employees

Students of the University of Midwifery Education & Studies Maastricht (AVMU) automatically receive an AVMUcard at the start of their study. Employees automatically receive an AVMUcard at the start of their employment.
You need the card to enter the library. You can activate your card for library use at the information desk during full-service hours. The information desk is located on the ground floor of the Inner City Library and at level 1 in the Randwyck Library.

MUMC employees

Employees automatically receive a MUMC card at the start of their employment.
You need your card to enter the library. You can activate your card for library use at the information desk during full-service hours. The information desk is located on the ground floor of the Inner City Library and at level 1 in the Randwyck Library. 

Open Universiteit/UKB students

Type of membership Open Universiteit students:

  • 1-year membership
  • No costs
  • For private purposes only 
  • Please keep in mind most electronic sources require a physical presence in the library and cannot be accessed off campus

Type of membership UKB students/employees:

  • 1-year membership
  • No costs
  • For private purposes only

How to get a UMcard?

You can apply for a UMcard at the information desk during full-service hours.
The information desk is located on the ground floor of the Inner City Library and at level 1 in the Randwyck Library.


What do you need to do?

  • Show a valid identity card
  • Show a valid student ID or a valid employee ID

 How long is your library card valid?

  • 1 year from the date of registration
  • Your membership stops automatically
  • Each year you can apply for a new membership at the information desk during full-service hours
Open Universiteit employees

Researchers and supporting staff of the Open Universiteit can use this webform to apply for a UMcard. You need your card to enter the library.
Within two weeks the UMcard will be sent to your work address.

UM alumni

Type of membership:

  • 1-year membership
  • Costs €36,50 a year (payment by bank card only)
  • Use the library for private purposes only
  • Please keep in mind most electronic sources require a physical presence in the library and cannot be accessed off campus
  • During exam weeks access to the library is not possible. Please also check our regular opening hours and locations.

Other visitors

Library visitor card

  • Costs €10,00 a day (payment by bank card only)
  • You need to make an appointment in advance to visit the library
  • There is a limited amount of visitor cards a day available
  • Visiting is possible during opening hours of the information desk
  • Access to the library is only possible with a visitor card
  • Use the public workstations to access the catalogue, most databases, e-journals and e-books
  • Books are for reference only and cannot be borrowed
  • You can use the visitor card to print, to request items from the closed stacks and to go to the UM cafeteria
  • You will have a workplace near the information desk
  • During exam weeks access to the library is not possible. Please also check our regular opening hours and locations.

You can apply for a visitor card at the information desk during full-service hours.
The information desk is located on the ground floor of the Inner City Library and at level 1 in the Randwyck Library.


What do you need to do?

  • Make an appointment through Ask your librarian
  • You will receive a confirmation mail between 8.30 – 17.00 on a workday (Monday-Friday)
  • Show a valid identity card.
