A student project for Maastricht University Special Collections

A new digital exhibition developed for Maastricht University Special Collections is now available online. Created by Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences student Jacob Hamblen Monninger as part of his internship, the project presents a digital exploration of military memory tourism in Europe using materials from the university’s Special Collections.

Jacob is currently completing the MA programme Digital Studies: Media Cultures at Maastricht University. His broader interests centre on travel, media and the role of digital platforms in shaping travel experiences. Originally from the United States, he combines these interests through photography, video production and his YouTube channel Hoosier Tours. After completing this project, Jacob will travel across the United States to document local events and commemorations connected to the country’s 250th anniversary.

The digital exhibition

The exhibition is based on a selection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century travel guides preserved in the Special Collections depot. By examining these sources, Jacob highlights how guidebooks can reveal changing attitudes towards travel, commemoration and historical sites.

Presented as a multimodal StoryMap, the exhibition combines historical interpretation with digital mapping, images and video. The format allows visitors to follow developments across different regions of Europe while engaging with materials from the Special Collections in a new way.
