Most of our library visitors may know the glass sculptures at the Grote Looiersstraat 17 entrance gate of the Maastricht University Inner City Library. They were designed in 2009 by the Czech architect and designer Bořek Šípek. Unfortunately Sipek died in Prague last Saturday (13 February 2016) at the age of 66.

Šípek is known as ‘the father of Neo-Baroque’. He designed flamboyant glassware and furniture. In his home country former Czech president Václav Havel appointed him as court architect of Prague Castle, his official residence.

The library entrance gate, measuring several meters in height, consists of a black steel construct that is somewhat reminiscent of long flower stems that culminate in mouthblown leaves, flowers, and flower buds in striking colors. Let’s treasure this beautiful piece of artwork even more now that its designer has passed away.
