Why use iThenticate?
Publishing original work is fundamental to academic integrity. iThenticate helps you:
- Identify unintentional similarities with existing publications
- Detect improper citations or references
- Ensure your work meets publisher standards before submission
- Protect your academic reputation
How iThenticate works
The service generates a Similarity Index that measures how much your manuscript resembles previously published text. This doesn’t automatically indicate plagiarism—it simply highlights areas that need your attention for proper attribution.
The similarity report provides:
- An overall similarity percentage
- Highlighted text showing potential matches
- Source identification for each match
- Options to exclude quotes, bibliographies, or small matches
Getting started with iThenticate
1. Login and Need-to-know information
Visit our iThenticate – Similarity checks for researchers page for all the information you need before using the service. Use the direct UM company login (Multi-Factor Authentication) on this page. Do not start from the iThenticate home page.
3. First-time setup
Check your personal information and accept the terms and conditions.
4. Navigate folders
Use the “My Folders” section to manage your documents.
5. Upload your manuscript
Enter authorship details and document title, then select your file.
6. Review the Similarity Report
After processing (usually a few minutes), view your similarity score and evaluate any highlighted matches.
Understanding your results
Remember that similarity doesn’t automatically mean plagiarism. Common phrases, correctly quoted material, and standard methodological descriptions may all generate matches. The similarity score alerts you to areas requiring review.
Use the report to:
- Identify text needing proper citation
- Rephrase sections with high similarity
- Ensure all quotes are properly formatted
- Check reference accuracy
