Now that the last batch of furniture has arrived, the brand new Paul-Henri Spaak Learning Spaces are open for use. The movable furniture makes this learning space a multifunctional environment for collaborative studying in Randwyck.

The new home of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the Paul-Henri Spaaklaan (PHS) is now equipped with 100 new corona-proof study places. In a normal situation, 300 study places are at your disposal.

Designed by students

The new learning spaces reflect the way students nowadays wish to use their learning spaces. “We invited a group of students to brainstorm about the design of the space.” said Carin Klompen, manager of UM Library locations. “With their help, we created a place that is as inspiring as it is versatile for everyone in the community”.

Movable furniture

The PHS Learning Spaces have movable furniture and room dividers that can be used for solo study or group work. Not only the chairs and tables are easily movable, but even the plant racks are. Furthermore, there are enough electrical outlets and there is a nice setting of seats and bar stools.

The area, in the building’s central hall, will mainly be used as learning spaces for all UM students, but can just as easily be converted into a place to host events, such as UM Open Days. This central hall also houses a catering facility where you can have a bite to eat and drink a cup of coffee or tea. There is a free to use microwave available.

COVID-19 measures

The PHS Learning Spaces are open to UM students and employees. Visits are welcome, but please adhere to the national COVID-19 rules: wear a facemask and keep 1.5 meter distance at all time.
