Contrary to policy in recent years, the costs of publishing in hybrid journals will no longer be reimbursed from the Incentive Fund. The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO has modified the criteria for its Incentive Fund Open Access – Publications. Funding is no longer available for all Open Access publications.

Hybrid journals are traditional, subscription-based journals which make individual articles immediately available to the public if the author pays an additional Open Access fee. The fee you have to pay is generally known as an article processing or publishing charge (APC). With APCs you buy the right to publish an exact copy of the final version of an article.

As from July 2015, only Open Access journals in the strict sense are covered by the NWO funding scheme. Main applicants for NWO-funded research can apply for a contribution from the Incentive Fund Open Access – Publications to publish their research results in Open Access. A maximum budget of €6,000 is available for each research project.

For further information on conditions and the application procedure, please go to the NWO website.
