Do not use storage solutions that are not presented in the storage finder and that UM does not have a contract with, such as public cloud services (e.g. Dropbox, GoogleDrive). This is for privacy reasons, because the continuity of these services is not guaranteed and because providers might even obtain undesired rights of ownership of your stored files.

To get started with the storage finder, set the filters to match your needs. The possible solutions will be displayed.

For more information on the filters, hover over the “i” next to the questions. For more details about a storage solution, click on that specific solution and find out more about costs, backups, maximum storage size and more.

You may not get a storage solution that meets all your requirements or you may get more than one storage option. If in doubt, or if the storage finder gives an unclear or no result, do not hesitate to contact the data steward of your faculty or rdm-services@maastrichtuniversity.nl for tailored advice.

Important information about registration and classification of research projects

Your research project has to be registered in UM’s/your faculty’s research register and, especially if personal identifiable information is being processed, in the GDPR register.  An important part of the registration is a risk assessment, the CIA-classification: determine the risks with respect to Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability. The Integrity and Confidentiality aspects are also important to guarantee data subjects’ privacy when processing personal data. The resulting risks are determined in a so-called Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) within the framework of the GDPR.
You can use this tool to give you an idea on how this classification (Low, Medium or High) effects your choices of tools, but remember: every tool can be implemented or used wrongly. If you use Maastricht University’s ICT facilities, you have to comply with UM’s policies. Find links to safety tips on the ICTS security pages.  Besides that, different phases of your project sometimes need different tooling.
So before making a definite choice, please finalize your registration and assess the specific security and privacy requirements of your project.
