Learning Cycle Toolbox

The Learning Cycle Toolbox supports students and teachers in self‑regulated learning through a set of concise, practical tools aligned with every phase of the learning cycle. Originally developed for Maastricht University’s medical curriculum, it now serves as an easy‑to‑use resource for any SRL-promoting higher‑education context.

Book Description

The Learning Cycle Toolbox is designed to support the learning process and the development of self‑regulated learning (SRL) in higher education.

The tools align with the phases and steps of the (self‑regulated) learning cycle (Plan – Act – Look Back) and can be used independently by students or initiated by the teacher. Additional sets of tools are included to offer structure for student team meetings and one‑on‑one coaching sessions. All tools are brief, practical, and easy to apply – no long texts.

The development of this toolbox is supported by NKO Comenius Senior Fellowship Grant nr. 40.5.22865.411.

  • The starting point provides a concise introduction to the learning cycle and easy access to the toolsets for each step in the cycle.
  • Within each toolset, the content list allows for an easy overview and quick selection of specific tools.

Target audiences and educational use

This toolbox is designed to help students strengthen their self‑regulated learning (SRL) skills. It also serves as a useful resource for teachers who support students in developing SRL.

Although it was originally created for Maastricht University’s medical curriculum, it may also inspire use in other higher‑education contexts where SRL is encouraged. Because tools work best when tailored to their specific setting, the current materials are intentionally fit for purpose. However, they can be easily adapted for use in other educational environments.

How to use this toolbox:

  • Go to the Learning Cycle Toolbox starting point.
  • From there, navigate to the tools that correspond to the SRL phase, step, or skillset you want to work on:

About the authors

Judith Sieben (ORCID) is an Associate Professor at Maastricht University, working in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) and the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI).

Sylvia Heeneman (ORCID) is a Professor at Maastricht University, FHML and the School of Health Professions Education (SHE).

Mascha Verheggen is a Senior Lecturer at Maastricht University, FHML and School of Health Professions Education (SHE).

Fatemeh Janesarvatan (ORCID) is a Researcher at Maastricht University, School of Business and Economics (SBE).

Joost van Wijchen (ORCID) is an Associate Professor at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL).

Loes van Bokhoven (ORCID) is a Medical Doctor working in General Practice and Professor at Maastricht University, FHML and the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI).

Anique de Bruin (ORCID) is a Professor at Maastricht University, FHML and the School of Health Professions Education (SHE).

The Learning Cycle Toolbox was developed as part of her NKO Comenius Senior Fellowship.
