Digital fabrication is a process in which digital designs are turned into physical objects using technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting and 3D scanning. Maastricht University Library offers access to a 3D lab where students and staff can develop small-scale prototypes, test ideas and bring designs to life.

The Digital Fabrication Lab enables small-scale production using 3D printers, a laser cutter and a 3D scanner.
3D printing
3D printing is a process in which a digitally designed 3D model is turned into a physical object by building it layer by layer. 3D printing brings your idea to life or it enables you to test your prototype. This mesmerising process also helps to develop skills such as digital literacy, creativity and problem solving. The 3D Lab includes three 3D printers (Ultimaker 2+ Connect, Ultimaker 3 Extended, Ultimaker S5). Standard materials such as PLA filament are available, and using your own materials is only allowed with staff approval. Larger or more complex projects should be discussed in advance. Users must follow copyright, safety and usage rules, and handle equipment responsibly.
Laser cutter
A laser cutter is a machine that uses a laser beam to cut, engrave, or mark materials like wood, acrylic, metal, and paper. With a laser cutter you can brings your idea to life or it enables you to test your prototype. The 3D Lab includes a Creality Falcon2 Pro 60W laser cutter.
3D scanner
A 3D scanner is a device that helps you create a digital model of a physical object. The 3D Lab includes a Creality CR Scan Otter 3D scanner.
You can book all equipment for your own project or request basic printing support from staff.

What 3D printing services are offered by the University Library?

Where can I find the 3D-printers?
In the Innercity Library you can find a Ultimaker 2+ Connect, Ultimaker 3 Extended, and a Ultimaker S5 in room 1.209.
In the Randwyck Library you can find a Ultimaker S5 on level 3 next to room K3.487 (DIY Podcast Studio)

What are the rules & restrictions?
A project needs to be finished well within the opening hours of the library. Due to safety regulations, it is not allowed to leave equipment running overnight.
- Using other material or using your own is possible with permission of the library staff
- Discuss large projects with the library staff first
- Making weapons or weapon parts (including cosplay props, accessories or toys) & sexually explicit materials is not allowed
- Be mindful of intellectual property such as copyright, trademarks, patents and privacy rules.
- Please make sure to empty the USB-sticks etc. after use.
- Please be mindful of the equipment and the use of materials
