Working towards the academic library of the future

Maastricht University Library is launching Citizen Science activities to strengthen collaboration between researchers and the wider community. As part of this development, the library will host the Citizen Science Matchmaking Event on 15 December 2025. This event is a “science-fair meets speed-dating” format that brings citizens and researchers together to explore opportunities for involvement in ongoing projects. The event is free and open to everyone, and members of the public are warmly encouraged to register and take part. Don't hesitate to tell your neighbours, friends, or family about this opportunity, not only to get to know some of UM's research projects but also to actively take part in them. Sign up now for the Citizen Science Matchmaking Event

The library is also contributing to De BRUG Citizen Science Hub, which recently received national funding to broaden inclusive and community-driven research across the region. The UM Library represents Maastricht University within this hub, in partnership with MUMC+, Radboud Universiteit, RUMC, Open Universiteit, Avans Hogeschool, and Hogeschool Arnhem-Nijmegen (HAN). Through participation in this initiative, Maastricht University Library helps to ensure that the university’s initiatives align with wider national efforts to promote citizen engagement, knowledge exchange and societally relevant research.

Did you know...

... that our Special Collections house a rich array of rare and original sources, waiting to be discovered? Whether you're a student, scholar, or simply curious, you're welcome to dive into the past with us.

Working with primary sources, such as original letters, manuscripts, maps, or early printed books, offers a unique window into history. These materials allow researchers to form their own interpretations, uncover hidden narratives, and engage directly with the voices of the past. Unlike secondary sources, primary documents provide unfiltered insights, encouraging critical thinking and fostering a deeper understanding of historical contexts.
