The project applies Linked Open Data (LOD) principles, using the libraries’ collection management system (Omeka-S) together with Wikidata as key platforms to connect information across institutions and make it visible and reusable globally. To achieve this, the project developed the Omeka-S-to-Wikidata Tool, which automatically extracts metadata from Omeka-S, transforms it according to Wikidata’s structure, and loads it into Wikidata for global visibility and reuse.
Coordinated by Hilde van Wanroij (RU) and Maryam Mazaheri (UM), the project team combines technical experts, curators, and metadata specialists. Together, they developed sustainable digital workflows and developed the Omeka-S-to-Wikidata Tool to support long-term access to cultural heritage.
The digital topstukken are available online, opening a window into the rich academic and cultural history preserved within both universities’ collections.
Final presentation
The final presentation of the Open Topstukken Project took place on 27 October 2025 at the National Library of the Netherlands (KB) in The Hague. During the event, project partners from Maastricht University and Radboud University gathered with Wikidata specialists and representatives from various institutions, including the KB and Wikimedia Nederland.
After a brief introduction outlining the project’s goals and collaborative framework, the team presented the main results and tools, including the Omeka-S to Wikidata Tool. The demonstrations sparked valuable questions and discussions about interoperability, metadata alignment, and technical implementation.
The session concluded with an interactive hands-on demonstration, allowing participants to see the workflow in practice and provide feedback. Overall, the meeting highlighted the project’s success in connecting collections, improving metadata quality, and strengthening collaboration between institutions.
