Over six weeks, students explored how medieval history connects to present-day issues, including the misuse of historical narratives, scapegoating of minorities, and the spread of misinformation during pandemics. This course was led by Joris Roosen.
A key component of the course was the collaboration with UM Library Special Collections, where curator Odin Essers introduced students to rare historical sources. Classes were also held at the Historisch Centrum Limburg, offering a unique learning environment.

The course concluded with a guest lecture by Lisa Fagin Davis on the Voynich manuscript and a final interactive assignment in which students engaged with an AI model of Francesco Petrarca.
The course highlighted the continued relevance of medieval studies in understanding modern society and will return next academic year.
Hands-on engagement with primary sources
By combining historical inquiry with contemporary relevance and hands-on engagement with primary sources, the course demonstrated the enduring value of medieval studies, and the essential role of Special Collections in enriching academic education.
