NWO grants - calls issued after 1 Jan 2021

Journal Articles

Is Open Access mandatory?
Yes.

When accessible
Immediately upon publication – no embargo.

Version
Author’s Accepted Manuscript (AAM) or Publisher’s Version (Version of Record).

Compliant Open Access routes
Gold OA, Hybrid OA (via transformative agreements),¹ Green OA.
Use the Journal Checker Tool to check whether a specific journal complies with NWO’s open access requirements.

Copyright
Authors have to retain the copyright.

Creative Commons licensing
CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution) – CC-BY-ND (Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivatives) by exception).

APC funding
APC costs can be claimed from the grant budget during the project period, but only for Gold OA journals or platforms (no hybrid journals).

Is the rights Retention Strategy supported?
Yes

¹ The open access institutional agreements are considered transformative and are therefore compliant with NWO’s policy.

Books

Is Open Access mandatory?
Yes, for peer-reviewed books with an academic readership.

When accessible
Preferably immediately, but an embargo of up to 12 months is accepted.

BPC funding
NWO’s OA Book Fund (€10,000 per project).

Yes, via a trusted repository (e.g. Maastricht University Research Information / Pure).

When accessible
Immediately upon publication – no embargo.

Author’s Accepted Manuscript (AAM) or Publisher’s Version (Version of Record).

Compliant Open Access routes
All, provided that the publication is immediately open access, available via a trusted repository under a CC BY licence.

Open Research Europe (ORE)

Authors involved in H2020 and Horizon Europe projects can publish their results open access for free on the European Commission’s publishing platform Open Research Europe (ORE).

Plan S

Plan S is an initiative by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funding organisations, including the Dutch national funding organizations NWO and ZonMw.

Plan S aims to strengthen funding organisations’ open access mandates. The policy is in effect from January 2021.
