The Vesalius Room is a special room we designed in cooperation with the Anatomy Department of FHML. You can find this room on the first floor, right next to the anatomy books collection, by heading left after entering the Randwyck Library. The room is open to anyone who wants to study or is interested in anatomy, or anyone who is simply looking for a quiet place to study in the library.

Vesalius Room, Randwyck library, UNS50

In the Vesalius room, you can find the following facilities:

  • A multitude of anatomical models, which can be taken apart to study their inner structures and components
(see “Anatomy models in the Vesalius Room”)
  • Two (real) skeletons, to study the bones of the human body
  • A 3D-Vesalius system, allowing students and researchers to navigate through the human body slice by slice
    (see “The 3D-Vesalius system”)
  • Presentation of the second volume of an anatomical atlas from our Special Collections: the first collected edition of the works of Andreas Vesalius, with the famous woodcuts reproduced as copperplate engravings by Jan Wandelaar in 1725
    (see “The name Vesalius”)
  • An extensive collection of modern anatomical study books, free to pick up from the shelves and to study in our library
(see “Anatomy books in the Vesalius room”)
  • Enhanced digital access of the first collected 1725 edition of the works of Andreas Vesalius
(see “the first collected 1725 edition of the works of Andreas Vesalius”)
The name Vesalius

Andreas Vesalius (Andries van Wesel, 1513-1564) was an anatomist who wrote the Humani Corporis Fabrica, one of the most groundbreaking and influential books on human anatomy. Due to this, Andreas Vesalius is often seen as the founder of modern human anatomy. This is why the room was given the name “Vesalius Room”. In this room, the second volume of the collected edition is showcased.

The 3D Vesalius system

In the Vesalius Room, you will also find a futuristic looking device called the “3D-Vesalius system”. Using a special ball (which you can request at the information desk) and a pedal, you can move through different anatomical structures of the human body and visualise inner realistic structures, without having to perform actual dissections.

Anatomy models in the Vesalius room

The anatomical models in the Vesalius room can be used for studying. You can find embryology related models in different stages of development, whole-torso models both male and female, models of the eye and ear, models of the trachea and pharynx, models of the leg and foot, and more!

Anatomy books in the Vesalius room

Our goal is to keep the anatomy books collection in the Vesalius room up to date. Therefore our physical collection contains many renowned titles such as Netters, Prometheus, and Grey’s Anatomy. For a complete overview of our anatomy collection, please see umlib.nl/cd-anatomy
