Maastricht University encourages researchers to publish or register research data to make it discoverable, citable and accessible to feature research (i.e. FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable), as described in UM’s Research Data Management Code of Conduct. To facilitate (meta)data registration and publication, UM researchers can use data repositories such as DataverseNL, curated by the University Library.

Why use DataverseNL?
Trusted data repository
DataverseNL is a trustworthy research data repository provided by a consortium of Dutch research institutions, including Maastricht University and Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS). This platform enables researchers to archive and publish a wide variety of academic data in a secure sustainable environment. DataverseNL is implemented on original open source Dataverse software, developed by Harvard University.
Access to data on researcher’s terms
DataverseNL allows researchers to share data with other academics or interested parties while maintaining control over access. Researchers decide who can access specific datasets, considering institutional policies, research collaborations, privacy regulations, intellectual property interests and embargo periods.
Visibility and academic credit
DataverseNL provides tools for scholarly data citation, making it easier for researchers to publish their data and receive academic recognition. Once a dataset is created, it is assigned a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which persistently links to the data. Researchers can include the DOI in a Data Availability Statement accompanying their published article. Evidence suggests that datasets with DOIs receive more citations.
To further enhance the visibility of your research, it’s good practice to register the dataset’s metadata in UM’s Current Research Information System (CRIS) and link it to your Open Researcher and Contributor iD (ORCID) profile, ensuring your datasets are discoverable in the Maastricht University | MUMC+ Research Information portal.
