Access library resources
Use these options to access library-licensed databases, e-journals and e-books. Access via the Library website is usually the most direct route. The Lean Library browser extension can help when you start your search elsewhere on the web.
Access via the Library website
Run a search using the main search box on the Resources page. Starting from the Library website helps you avoid paywalls for online resources that are already available to you through the University Library. You will be prompted to log in with your UM, MUMC+ or AV-M account before accessing a licensed online resource.
Note: A small number of Maastricht University’s online resources are restricted by license agreements and cannot be accessed off-campus.
Lean Library browser extension
Add the Lean Library browser extension to your internet browser. It helps you access library-licensed resources while browsing websites outside the Library website. For more information, visit the Lean Library Browser Extension service page for instructions and to download the extension.
Access software
Students and staff can use selected software in different ways. Some software is available through Student Desktop Anywhere, while other packages can be installed directly on your own device. Availability may depend on your role, faculty or licence conditions.
Student Desktop Anywhere — for students only
Student Desktop Anywhere gives UM students access to a Windows desktop environment with selected UM software, without installing each software package locally. Use SDA when you need access to software or services that are available in the student desktop environment.
Info about Student Desktop Anywhere (SDA)
SDA offers access to the Online Library, I-drive, Office 2016, and other software like Atlas.ti, Complete Anatomy, EndNote, SPSS, MATLAB, and R, as well as faculty-specific applications.
Available software in SDA
The available software in SDA can change over time and can be different per faculty. Check this list with software available in SDA

Software for your own device
Some software packages offered in Student Desktop Anywhere are also available as downloads for students and staff through the ICTS Self-Service Portal. This allows you to install and use selected software directly on your own device.
SURF, the Dutch national organization for the support of higher education, offers more software for purchase, sometimes at reduced prices for students and staff of Dutch universities. Go to the SURF website for more information and to see what software is available.
Staff network access
Staff may need VPN access for selected university services that require a secure connection to the UM network. VPN is not the standard route for accessing library resources, but is used for specific staff services and network access.
Virtual Private Network – for staff only
The Maastricht University VPN (Virtual Private Network) connects your device securely to the university network. This service is for UM staff working from remote locations.
After having installed and activated the VPN connection, your device will communicate with the Internet via the UM VPN server. Consequently, you can use your device as if you were on campus.
For more information, please check the ICTS manual. If you are off-campus, you will need to log in with your UM account in order to gain access to these manuals. The UM VPN is serviced by the ICT Service Centre.
