What is Canvas?
Canvas is an online Learning Management System (LMS) accessible to all students and staff at Maastricht University. Students can find the course materials for every course in Canvas.
Canvas offers teachers tools for:
- Practice (quizzes, interactive activities and discussion boards),
- Collaboration (group work, peer review and group member evaluation).
- Assessment (assignments, plagiarism and AI detection).
Third-party tools in Canvas
The following educational tools are integrated in Canvas at Maastricht University:
Digital portfolio and programmatic assessment (PebblePad)
PebblePad is Maastricht University’s digital portfolio tool for learning, programmatic assessment and showcasing.
PebblePad is integrated in Canvas. You can create a PebblePad workspace for every Canvas course and all Canvas users are automatically synced to PebblePad. This integration needs to be set-up by a PebblePad admin.

Download all assignments in Canvas (Assignment Download Tool)
Teachers can download all submissions for an assignment from a specific date onwards by using the Assignment Download tool. You can also download all submissions per tutorial group.
The University Library developed the Assignment Download Tool because in Canvas you can only download all submissions from the start of the course.

Generate your course syllabus (Course2PDF)
You can create a syllabus from your Canvas course content. Add your content to your course and the tool turns this into a syllabus (PDF file).
Go to your course homepage and click ‘Course2PDF’ in the menu on the right to get started.

Interactive learning activities (FeedbackFruits)
With FeedbackFruits you can add engaging learning activities, such as peer review and group member evaluation, to your Maastricht University Canvas course.

Plagiarism and AI detection (Turnitin Originality)
Turnitin Originality is Maastricht University’s plagiarism tool that is integrated in Canvas. This plagiarism tool is only available to UM employees (teachers and tutors).
Turnitin is meant for educational purposes. Researchers can use iThenticate to check papers before publication.
How to access Turnitin:

You can access Turnitin via the Gradebook in Canvas. Find detailed instructions in Getting started with Turnitin. - Direct link: https://turnitin.maastrichtuniversity.nl/
You can access Turnitin directly if you want to upload a paper without an assignment in Canvas.
